5 Rare Plants That Are
Easy to Grow in 2021

What are some rare plants that are easy to grow?

Short Answer: Philodendron Pink Princess, Monstera Deliciosa Albo Variegata, Philodendron Gloriosum, Philodendron Verrucosum, Anthurium Clarinervium

Plant lovers are constantly searching for where to buy rare and exotic plants online. In fact, it’s even easier to grow them, providing you first have to start with a small cutting or a mother plant of the genus you like. So stop stressing over where to buy Monstera Albo online or where to find a hot bright pink Philodendron Pink Princess. See below for the top 5 rare plants you can grow in your home.

Philodendron Pink Princess

There’s no need to introduce this popular plant made famous by Instagram influencers. Many said the PPP is overrated but it is quite amazing to own one that has a half moon or a complete pink leaf because they are hard to come by. We simply have no complete control over how the foliage of the next leaf will be.

You can provide the optimal environment for Philodendron Pink Princess care to potentially push out a pink leaf (read How to Get Super Bright Pink Leaves on the Philodendron Pink Princess). PPPs are easy to grow from cuttings and they are not too susceptible to diseases.

Prices of Philodendron Pink Princess for sale increased tremendously in recent years, ranging from $70 per cutting to $600 for a mother plant. There is also a term called reverted Philodendron Pink Princess where leaves lose their pink variegation. To encourage potential pink leaves to grow, simply cut back the plant above the last pink leaf you see!

Monstera Deliciosa Albo Variegata

The Monstera Albo is definitely one of the most wanted wish list plant of 2020-21. The reason why Monstera Albos are so expensive is because of its unpredictability in producing beautiful white variegation. It is also made famous by Instagram influencers with creative hashtags like #MonsteraMonday. Prices of Monstera Albos ranges from $150 for a cutting to as much as $1500 for a monster mother plant, depending on its size, fenestration and variegation.

It’s rather easy to grow Monstera Albos IF YOU know how to root or propagate the plant, give it high humidity and make sure it gets JUST ENOUGH indirect light WITHOUT burning the sensitive white part of the leaves. This is the key to maintaining a healthy and NON-CRISPY Monstera Albo plant. You often see burnt edges on the plant because of lack of humidity and the close distance to the light. Many people love buying Monstera Albo nodes to root for a lower price but the risk of failure is high.

In 2021, however, we are seeing the trend to move slightly towards two other forms of Monstera Deliciosa, which is, the Monstera Aurea and the Monstera Deliciosa Mint! The Monstera Thai Constellation seem to have lost value after the announcement of Costa Farms’ plans to commercialize and mass produce the plant in 2022.

Philodendron Gloriosum

Philodendron Gloriosum is a heartleaf-shaped velvety plant with white veins. It’s and unusual plant and hard to come by in the US but if you get ahold of one, it’s very easy to maintain and grow more baby plants.

The key to making sure your Philodendron Gloriosum is happy is giving the rhizome a lot of space to grow. Get a long and rectangular pot planter and give it chunky aroid soil and you will be blessed with a fast growing Gloriosum plant.

Since trend is ever moving, hybrid breeders have since crossbred the Gloriosum with other rare exotic plants like Melanochrysum, Pastazanum, McDowell and Verrucosum. Prices for the Philodendron Gloriosum can range from $100 to $500 depending on its size.

Philodendron Verrucosum

The Verrucosum definitely deserves the definition of a rare and exotic plant. This is because of its hairy stem and striking green velvety tuna colored foliage in the back.

The fuzz in the back looks sharp and dangerous but in reality, they are soft and fuzzy like a teddy bear. Surprisingly, there are many types of Verrucosums but the most sought after breeds are the Tumbez and Esmeraldas.

Verrucosums are hard to find in the US and also don’t like being shipped. However, if you obtain one, they grow very fast under extremely high humidity and medium indirect light. As they grow, they would need a pole to support them upward as these are trailing plants. Prices for Philodendron Verrucosums range from $100 per cutting to $500 for a rooted plant depending on how rare the breed is.

Anthurium Clarinervium

Anthurium Clarinervium has such an intense vibe because of its dark green and white veiny foliage but yet so romantic because of its heart-shaped leaves. Anthurium Clarinervium leaves are fuzzy and velvety to the touch.

The best part of the leaves are as hard as card stock paper. It’s not native to the US so it’s pretty rare but once you get a hold of a mother plant, they are easy to split and grow.

Clarinervium loves chunky aroid soil and high indrect sunlight. They are also happy under grow lights with medium to high humidity. It’s easy to tell if your Clarinervium is happy - if it grows an extra stem for its flowering bud (spadix), you’re on the right track.

Prices now range from $150 for a baby plant to $400 for a mother plant depending on size.
